A tier
one supplier to the Automotive industry, located in Utica, MI is one
of the world's largest manufacturers of automotive, commercial, industrial
and specialty fasteners.
After deciding to bring their heat treating process in-house, the
company employed AGVs for the process of delivering containers to
each end of the process. Manual fork trucks deliver any of three types
of containers filled with fasteners from the manufacturing area to
an on-the-floor buffer storage area, just ahead of the heat-treating
furnace lines. That is where AGVs step in. Three laser-guided AGVs
pickup the containers of fasteners from the buffer storage location
and deliver them to a feed point for the four furnaces. AGVs then
proceed to carry the empty containers to a washing station and, finally,
carry the clean containers to the end of the furnaces where heat-treated
fasteners are then deposited back into the clean containers, prior
to shipment.
In this particular application, the main factors for deciding to go
with Automated Guided Vehicles were labor savings and manufacturing
process control for just-in-time delivery. |
