At
this major mail carrier's Integrated Processing Facility, there is
a highly automated processing environment that integrates state-of-the-art
material handling technology with existing mail automation technology.
In a complex environment like mail handling facilities, Automated
Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are successfully used to transport pallets
of mail into processing areas. AGVs have proven to offer increased
safety over conventional forklift operators. With critical and daily
deadlines to meet, the U.S. mail system benefits from the dependable
and constant operation of the AGVs. Reduced product damage, on-time
deliveries, and no accidents make AGVs an attractive option.
"The United States Postal Service's Integrated Processing
Facility concept is a highly automated processing environment that
integrates state-of-the-art material handling technology with existing
mail automation technology," said Roger McLarry, Operations Support
Specialist for the Fort Myers, Florida Processing & Distribution
Center. "Our facility is engaged in a program to test the potential
of the IPG concept that may be implemented nationwide. A key material
handling component utilized in our facility is Automated Guided Vehicles
which reduce the manual pulling and pushing of rolling containers
and pallets full of mail.
The IPF concept is the result of postal employees' recommendations
to reduce the risk of injury, improve processing efficiency, and create
an environment in which they control the machines that do the work,"
McLarry explained. Laser-guided AGVs are "an integral part of
our success." |
