Automatic Guided Vehicles Safely Handle Dangerous Loads.
At a major Taiwanese nuclear plant, a pallet of nuclear waste is introduced into the storage facility every 45 minutes. An Automated Guided Vehicle System was recently installed to increase safety for the plant's employees. Actual contact with the load or AGVs is controlled due to unsafe levels of radiation. Humans are only permitted in the storage facility wearing approved protective gear, and for limited amounts of time.

AGVs transport pallets of waste from a first floor pick up location to a multi-floor storage facility. TRACE directs the AGVs to the correct floor and a specific, predetermined storage location. The vehicles are delivered to the correct floor via elevators, which open and close by direction from TRACE.

Each AGV is equipped with a sophisticated radiation tolerant on-board camera for 24-hour surveillance. Any system errors that occur can be corrected remotely.

AGVs utilize opportunity battery charging. When the AGV is inactive, it automatically positions itself at an in-floor charge station for recharge.

Vehicles are equipped with laser bumpers that emit pulses of infrared light in an adaptable, predefined field in front of the vehicle, providing an image of any obstruction along the travel path. The AGV will slow down or stop until the obstruction clears.
