At
the Procter & Gamble facility in Mehoopany, Pennsylvania, AGVs
transport parent rolls of paper from paper machines to converting
lines. This plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making Automatic
Guided Vehicles were an attractive material handling solution. The
AGV System has resulted in reduced manual labor costs and minimized
product damage.
The eight AGVs are Rhino Fork Type vehicles, meaning that they are
equipped with a pole instead of traditional forks for efficient load
handling. Parent paper rolls can weigh up to 5,000 lbs, and reach
up to 100" in diameter. The pole, or "Rhino," is mounted
on a lifting screw and is able to lift or lower, depending on the
height of the load stand. Height capabilities are from 19-1/2"
to 8 feet.
AGVs travel off of the main guide path for short distances when loading
the paper rolls onto the converting lines. Laser guidance provides
supreme flexibility in navigation and for changes in guide paths.
Laser bumpers are standard equipment, allowing a smaller operating
space while keeping safety paramount by providing an "invisible"
area of protection around the vehicle. TRACE, AGV Products own supervisory control
software for complete AGV Systems operation provides coordination
of AGV move order execution to synchronize material movement with
production demands as well as traffic control & collision avoidance. |
