When the world leader in providing services to scientific, technical, and medical
publishers and the nation's 5th largest periodical printer decided to expand their
warehousing operations, they looked to an Automatic Guided Vehicle Solution from
AGV Products.
The project presented a fairly unusual condition; the company
had split their Production lines and Warehousing operations into two separate
buildings, joined by a quarter-mile long covered tunnel.
AGV Products developed a system featuring the Odyssey
OF4 laser-guided Fork Truck vehicle, which could easily handle the difficult task
of maneuvering from one building to the other.

Once a load is manually delivered to the shrinkwrapping station, an AGV recieves
instruction from TRACE, AGV Products' Traffic Routing And Command Executive Software,
to pick the load from the conveyor.
After
depositing the load in one of two floor lanes in the Shipping / Fulfillent area,
the vehicle either returns to the Production building, or picks up a load of raw
materials from floor lanes for distribution to one of six presses in the printing
area.
|
The
vehicle then transports the load from the Production building to the Warehouse
down the quarter-mile covered connector, which includes a banked 3% grade.
Opportunity charging is achieved
at one of three designated charging stations
in the Printing facility. The vehicle automatically charges when there are no
outstanding requests for pickup at either the floor lane storage or shrinkwrapping
stations.
