AGVs in newsprint applications can perform roll handling and automated reel loading to the press. They are also useful for handling
inserts.
At San Jose Mercury News, AGV Products has replaced an outdated AGV System with a new ten vehicle, state-of-the-art AGV System that
features side loading vehicles. Paper rolls are prepped and weighed at one of two prep stations. Once the rolls are unwrapped and
white paper waste is removed, the rolls are transported by the AGVs to rack storage or to the press. The side loading style of the
vehicles is ideally suited to rack storage (over 900 locations). Calls for a paper roll are automatically received from the press
itself, but can be initiated manually via a touch screen located at the reel stands. As an added advantage, the AGVs can handle
both 50" and 55" rolls, as well as partial rolls.
The capability of the AGV System to process data allows the paper to maintain strict accountability for waste. Each roll is
scanned and its' net weight is recorded. If rolls are received with wet or transit damage, the system automatically pinpoints where
this damage is likely to have occurred, thus creating the evidence trail needed to obtain credit from suppliers where indicated.
Tracking software automatically transmits newsprint inventory data to the paper's own AbitRol Inventory System, allowing San Jose
Mercury News to share information with parent company, Knight Ridder, Inc.
The AGV System features automatic battery charging capability, where idle vehicles drive up to in-floor charging plates and
recharge for maximum availability. Laser bumper systems from SICK, Inc. are standard equipment, allowing the vehicle to operate
in smaller spaces while keeping safety paramount by providing an "invisible" area of protection around the vehicles.
AGV Products, Inc, also installed new conveyor as well as a new prep station with two strip stations. |
